SEIJI OZAWA
(1935 – 2024)
Le grand chef d’orchestre japonais s’en est allé, le mardi 6 février à Tokyo, à l’âge de 88 ans, suite à une insuffisance cardiaque. Depuis plusieurs années, il souffrait notamment de la maladie d’Alzheimer.
Nous parlerons de lui prochainement dans les pages consacrées à William Bill Russo (Partie 2) car c’est à la demande de Seiji Ozawa, qui appréciait beaucoup le Blues, que Bill composa les « Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra, op. 50 » (1968) et la « Street Music, A Blues Concerto, op. 65 » (1976).
Seiji Ozawa dirigea brillamment et enregistra les deux partitions avec le San Francisco Symphony Orchestra et l’ensemble de blues Siegel-Schwall Band (CD DGG 463 665-2) aussi sur YouTube : ci-dessous.
The great Japanese conductor died in Tokyo on Tuesday 6 February, aged 88, after suffering from heart failure. He had been suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years.
We'll be talking about him shortly in the pages devoted to William Bill Russo (Part 2), because it was at the request of Seiji Ozawa, who was a great fan of the Blues, that Bill composed the 'Three Pieces for Blues Band and Symphony Orchestra, op. 50' (1968) and the 'Street Music, A Blues Concerto, op. 65' (1976).

This album has already garnered great acclaim.

“Earth Symphony,” the ground-breaking choral symphony from GRAMMY-nominated composer Jake Runestad and poet Todd Boss, is a 5-part dramatic monologue from the voice of a post-anthropocene Mother Earth. The work imagines Earth’s hope for humanity, her discovery of its power, her ruination at its hands, her lament at its loss, and her recovery. By anthropomorphizing Earth herself, drawing on the familiar earth-mother trope, “Earth Symphony” enables entry into our own ecological shame, guilt, responsibility, potential, and redemption, all from a wide-angled, time-telescoped lens, thereby asking our most immediately pressing environmental questions in an entirely new way.
"Earth Symphony", la symphonie chorale révolutionnaire du compositeur Jake Runestad, nominé aux Grammy Awards, et du poète Todd Boss, est un monologue dramatique en cinq parties écrit par la voix d'une Terre mère post-anthropocène. Après avoir dirigé durant 43 ans, rénové et développé brillamment le département des Jazz Studies à l'Elmhurst University (ex-College), Doug Beach a estimé que le moment était venu de céder la place ; il prend donc sa retraite la tête pleine de merveilleux souvenirs.
La Direction de l'Elmhurst University Jazz Band et de certains Jazz Combos est confiée au trompettiste Kirk Garrison, très actif et apprécié dans la région de Chicago.
Le guitariste Mike Pinto devient Assistant Professor, Acting Director of Jazz Studies, Music Business. Il enseigne la guitare, l'improvisation et l'arrangement, dirige le Lab Band et un Jazz Combo.
After 43 years of directing, renovating and developing brilliantly the Jazz Studies Department at Elmhurst University (formerly the College), Doug Beach felt that the time had come to step down and he is retiring with a head full of wonderful memories.
The leadership of the Elmhurst University Jazz Band and some of the Jazz Combos was given to trumpeter Kirk Garrison, who is very active and popular in the Chicago area.
Guitarist Mike Pinto becomes Assistant Professor, Acting Director of Jazz Studies, Music Business. He teaches guitar, improvisation and arranging, and leads the Lab Band and a Jazz Combo.

Chroniqueur radio, producteur de disques, éducateur et historien dont la connaissance du jazz était légendaire tant globalement que dans le détail, Phil Schaap est décédé le 7 septembre à Manhattan après s'être longtemps battu contre un lymphome. Il avait 70 ans.

Très connu et apprécié comme musicien de jazz, le trompettiste Terence Blanchard (1962) fait son entrée, cette saison, au Metropolitan de New York avec son deuxième opéra "Fire Shut Up in My Bones" créé, en 2019, à l'Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (Missouri) qui lui avait déjà commandé, en 2013, son premier opéra "Champion".
Rappelons que Terence Blanchard a effectué des études musicales très approfondies. Grand improvisateur, il a notamment joué chez Lionel Hampton et chez Art Blakey. Il a enregistré une vingtaine d'albums sous son nom et remporté six Grammys. Particulièrement productif, Terence partage sa riche carrière entre la composition de musique de films (plus de 60), l'enseignement et la direction de son ensemble E-Collective ( aujourd'hui sous la conduite du saxophoniste Chris Potter).
Son opéra préféré est "La Bohème" de Puccini.

New Yorkers' first-ever chance to see a boxing match onstage at the Met came with the much-anticipated company premiere of Terence Blanchard’s "CHAMPION", an “opera in jazz,” which opened on April 10 in director James Robinson’s splashy, engrossing production. Blanchard and librettist Michael Cristofer (author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "The Shadow Box") based "Champion" on the real-life experiences of championship boxer Emile Griffith, who, during a March 24, 1962 match in Madison Square Garden, unintentionally killed his rival Benny Paret, who had taunted Griffith for his homosexuality during a pre-match weigh-in. Blanchard is remarkably successful in using voices trained for opera accompanied by swing rhythms to tell stories in the American vernacular—in this case, with plenty of profanity-. Blanchard’s unique idiom has a flexibility that enables him to slip fluidly between jazz and more traditional operatic styles. He typically begins a scene by establishing an irrepressible groove—at the heart of Blanchard’s large orchestration is a jazz quartet—and letting the whole scene spin out from there.

SFJAZZ has appointed Terence Blanchard as executive artistic director. In the new position, Blanchard will lead the organization’s artistic programming and guide its overall creative direction. His appointment comes as SFJAZZ founder Randall Kline prepares to step down from the organization he founded in 1983.
This year, SFJAZZ is celebrating its 40th anniversary and the 10th birthday of the SFJAZZ Center. Blanchard joins SFJAZZ as it prepares for the 2023–’24 season beginning Sept. 7.
